Obverse: Pitcher plant flower, the provincial flower of Newfoundland, with bilingual English/French name. PITCHER PLANT SARRACÉNIE POURPRE Reverse: Arms of Newfoundland with flag design with name and date. NEWFOUNDLAND 19 49 TERRE-NEUVE. The Arms feature as supporters two Indigenous Beothuk warriors, described in the original Coat of Arms granted by King Charles I to Sir David Kirke in 1637 as "two savages of the climates". The figures were meant to depict the Beothuk (the Indigenous people of the island who were "declared extinct" in 1829). Only in 2021 did Newfoundland amend its Coat of Arms Act to drop the the archaic and derogatory reference to "savages" and replace it with "Beothuk." Struck at the Lombardo Mint, Sherbrooke, Quebec. The "Provincial Arms and Flowers" Centennial Medallion series was part of a nation-wide series produced to celebrate Canada’s 100th anniversary of Confederation.
