Reverse: Features an aerial view of three early Indigenous American effigy mound" in the shapes of two bears and one bird. The design captures the unique landscape of the "Marching Bear Group" found in the monument's North Unit. The full inscription reads EFFIGY MOUNDS / IOWA / 2017 / E PLURIBUS UNUM. Obverse: Features the standard 1932 portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and QUARTER DOLLAR. This 2017 "Effigy Mounds National Monument" quarter is the 36th release in the "America the Beautiful" Quarters series. It honors a sacred site in Iowa that preserves more than 200 prehistoric earthworks built by Indigenous Americans, including many shaped like birds and bears. Effigy Mounds is located along the Mississippi River in Northeast Iowa. The mounds were constructed between 600 and 1,400 years ago and are considered sacred ancestral sites by numerous modern Indigenous tribes.
