This 2017 "George Rogers Clark National Historical Park" quarter is the 40th release in the "America the Beautiful" Quarters series. It honors the site in Indiana where Lieutenant Colonel George Rogers Clark led a surprise mid-winter march to capture Fort Sackville from the British in 1779, a pivotal victory that secured the "Old Northwest" for the American colonies during the Revolutionary War. Located in Vincennes, Indiana, the park commemorates one of the most heroic feats of the American Revolution. Clark and his small force of roughly 170 men marched through freezing, waist-deep water for 18 days to launch a surprise attack on the British-held fort. This victory was instrumental in the Treaty of Paris (1783), as it gave the United States a claim to the vast frontier lands that would eventually become the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
