The design is notably incuse, meaning the details are pressed into the metal rather than raised above the surface. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) brass token is a modern classic of New England transit history. Widely known by Bostonians as the "T" token, this heavy, small-diameter coin was the primary method for accessing the oldest subway system in North America during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Introduced in 1988 to accommodate fare increases, these tokens were designed to be robust and difficult to counterfeit.
