Obverse: Features the official crest of the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission, which incorporates elements of the Pennsylvania and New Jersey state seals. Above the central image is the word ESTABLISHED, and below it is the date 1934 (the year the Commission was founded). The outer ring of text reads DELAWARE RIVER JOINT TOLL BRIDGE COMMISSION · PENNSYLVANIA · NEW JERSEY. Reverse: States the token’s utility with the large central text BRIDGE TOKEN. The upper and lower circular inscriptions, in a much smaller font, read COMMUTER TOKEN and GOOD FOR ONE PASSAGE. The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission (DRJTBC) commuter token is a significant piece of regional infrastructure history, representing the mid-century transition to automated tolling between Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Issued from the early 1970s until their phase-out in the early 2000s, these brass tokens were the daily "bridge" for thousands of commuters crossing the Delaware River. These tokens were used at several non-interstate bridges connecting the two states, such as the New Hope-Lambertville and Easton-Phillipsburg crossings. They provided a discounted rate for frequent travelers compared to the cash toll. While the obverse displays 1934, these specific brass tokens were produced and circulated between 1970 and 2005. They were struck by the Mount Everest Mint in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. The Commission officially demonetized these tokens on July 1, 2005, following the widespread adoption of the E-ZPass electronic system. This lot includes five USA Delaware River Joint Toll "Bridge Passage" Tokens. Dimensions: Brass. 3.2 g. 20 mm. Pickup category timeslot {A}
