Bidding starts in 0d 1h 44m

Obverse: Features the "Uncrowned Portrait" of King George VI facing left, designed by Thomas Humphrey Paget. The portrait is celebrated for its clean, classical lines. The inscription reads GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP. ("George VI, by the Grace of God, King of all the Britons, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India"). Reverse: Features the iconic seated Britannia facing right, wearing a Corinthian helmet and holding a trident. Her right hand rests on a shield bearing the Union Flag, and the sea is visible in the background. The inscription reads ONE PENNY with the date 1949 in the exergue. The 1949 United Kingdom penny is one of the most significant and sought-after dates in the post-war George VI series. While the mintage figure was substantial, the vast majority of these coins were sent to the British colonies (particularly in Africa) rather than being released into domestic circulation. Consequently, finding a high-grade specimen within the UK is notably more difficult than for other years of the same era. By 1949, the demand for large bronze pennies in Britain was declining due to the increased use of the smaller brass threepence. Most 1949 pennies were exported to the West Indies and Africa, where they were often used until those nations achieved independence. The 1949 issue is the second-to-last "standard" penny struck for George VI before his death in 1952. Because so many were shipped overseas, they often returned to the collector market decades later with heavy wear or environmental damage from tropical climates. Dimensions: Bronze. 30.8 mm. 9.5 g.
