Obverse: Features the "First Portrait" (or Laureate Head) of Queen Elizabeth II by Mary Gillick. The Queen is depicted as a young woman facing right, wearing a laurel wreath tied with a ribbon. The inscription reads ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F. D. (Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith). Reverse: Features a floral design by Edgar Fuller and Cecil Thomas, representing the four nations of the United Kingdom: a Tudor Rose (England), a Thistle (Scotland), a Shamrock (Ireland), and a Leek (Wales), all intertwined. The inscription reads FID DEF above the design and SIX PENCE with the date 1962 below. The 1962 United Kingdom sixpence is a quintessential piece of late-reign Elizabeth II coinage. Often referred to as a "tanner," the sixpence was a beloved denomination in British culture, famously used for "stirring into Christmas puddings" for good luck and serving as the standard fare for many London bus routes. By 1962, the sixpence was composed of cupro-nickel, as silver had been phased out of circulating coinage in 1947. Dimensions: Cupro-Nickel (75% Copper, 25% Nickel). 19.3 mm. 2.83 g.
