Obverse: Features the "Uncrowned Portrait" of King George VI facing left, designed by Thomas Humphrey Paget. The inscription reads GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP. (George VI, by the Grace of God, King of all the Britains, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India). Reverse: Features the Scottish Crest: a crowned lion "sejant affronté" (sitting and facing forward) upon a crown, holding a sword and a scepter. To the sides are two Thistles. The inscription reads FID DEF above, with ONE SHILLING and the date 1948 below. The 1948 United Kingdom "Scottish" shilling is a significant post-war issue from the reign of King George VI. This was a period of transition for the Royal Mint as they moved away from silver toward cupro-nickel to help pay off war debts, and it also marked the final year the King's title included "Emperor of India." Following the independence of India in August 1947, the Royal Mint had to update the royal titles. The 1948 shilling is the final year to feature the "IND: IMP" abbreviation, making it a "type-ending" coin for many collectors. Despite the denomination being 12 pence, these coins were almost exclusively referred to as "shillings" or "bobs." In 1948, the Scottish version was struck in smaller quantities than the English version, maintaining its status as a slightly more elusive find in the "two-nations" series. Dimensions: Cupro-Nickel (75% Copper, 25% Nickel). 23.5 mm. 5.66 g. Pickup category timeslot {A}
