Obverse: Features the "First Portrait" (Laureate Head) of Queen Elizabeth II by Mary Gillick. She faces right, wearing a laurel wreath. The inscription reads ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA. Reverse: Features the Scottish Crest: a crowned lion "sejant affronté" (sitting and facing forward) upon a crown, holding a sword and a scepter. To the sides are two Thistles, the national emblem of Scotland. The inscription reads FID DEF above, with ONE SHILLING and the date 1954 below. The 1954 "Scottish" shilling is a notable early-reign issue of Queen Elizabeth II. Following the tradition established by her father, George VI, the Royal Mint produced two separate shilling designs to acknowledge the constituent nations of the United Kingdom. The Scottish version is often preferred by collectors for its intricate heraldic detail. The Scottish mintage was significantly lower than the English mintage that same year, making the Scottish 1954 a more difficult find for collectors.
