Lot #530: UK 1949 One Florin Coin - George VI - Two Shillings - Tudor Rose

Obverse: Features the "Uncrowned Portrait" of King George VI facing left, designed by Thomas Humphrey Paget. Following the independence of India, the inscription was updated to GEORGIVS VI D: G: BR: OMN: REX F: D:, notably excluding the "IND: IMP" (Emperor of India) title. Reverse: Features a crowned Tudor Rose in the center, flanked by a Thistle (Scotland) and a Shamrock (Ireland). Below the rose are two leeks (Wales). The design, by Cecil Thomas, is a harmonious representation of the four nations. The inscription reads TWO SHILLINGS above and the date 1949 below. The 1949 United Kingdom two-shilling piece, commonly known as a florin, is a key date in the post-war coinage of King George VI. Much like the penny of the same year, the 1949 florin is noted for its relatively low mintage compared to the surrounding years, and it is significantly harder to find in high-grade condition than the 1947 or 1948 issues. The florin, worth 24 pence or one-tenth of a pound, was a substantial and heavy coin that saw heavy use in daily commerce, especially for larger domestic purchases and in wage packets.
