Obverse: Features the "First Portrait" (Laureate Head) of Queen Elizabeth II by Mary Gillick. The Queen faces right, wearing a laurel wreath tied with a ribbon. The inscription reads ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA. Reverse: Features the Shield of the Royal Arms, designed by Edgar Fuller and Cecil Thomas. The shield contains the three lions of England, the lion of Scotland, and the harp of Ireland. It is flanked by the crowned monograms E R (Elizabeth Regina). The inscription reads FID DEF above, with HALF CROWN and the date 1957 below. The 1957 United Kingdom half crown is a prominent high-denomination coin from the early years of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. Worth two shillings and sixpence (or one-eighth of a pound), the half crown was the largest circulating coin in daily use and a symbol of significant purchasing power in the pre-decimal era. By 1957, the half crown was struck in cupro-nickel. This year saw a substantial mintage of over 34 million pieces, reflecting its importance in an era before the widespread use of high-value banknotes for small domestic transactions. Known colloquially as "two and six," the half crown was a substantial weight in a person's pocket. It remained legal tender until January 1, 1970, when it was withdrawn to prepare the public for the transition to decimal currency. Dimensions: Cupro-Nickel (75% Copper, 25% Nickel). 32.3 mm. 14.1 g.
