Obverse: Features a double-headed battle axe, known as the Francisque, which was the personal emblem of Marshal Philippe Pétain, leader of the Vichy state collaborating with the the German occupiers. The axe is flanked by two ears of wheat, symbolizing agricultural labor. The inscription reads ÉTAT FRANÇAIS (French State), notably replacing the traditional "République Française." Reverse: Features the denomination 1 FRANC flanked by two oak branches, representing strength. At the top is the new national motto adopted by the Vichy regime: TRAVAIL • FAMILLE • PATRIE ("Work, Family, Fatherland"), which replaced "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity" during the German occupation and French collaboration. The date 1942 is at the bottom, flanked by the Paris Mint cornucopia and the wing of the Chief Engraver. The 1942 French 1 Franc coin is a somber and historically significant issue from the era of the Vichy State (État Français) during the German occupation of World War II. It represents a total departure from the traditional republican symbols that had defined French currency for decades. By 1942, nickel and copper were prioritized for German military production. As a result, French coinage was struck in Aluminum, a lightweight and inexpensive metal that felt almost like a toy compared to the heavy silver and bronze coins of the past. This "Francisque" series was an deliberate attempt to instill the German occupation values of "Work" and "Fatherland". Following the liberation of France, these coins were replaced by republican designs, though many were kept as artifacts of the occupation years. Dimensions: Aluminum. 23 mm. 1.3 g.
