Lot #589: Greece 1982 Two Drachmai Coin - Crossed Rifles - Georgios Karaiskakis

Starting bidding

$1.00

Time Remaining:

Bidding starts in 0d 1h 44m

Obverse: Features the portrait in left profile of Georgios Karaiskakis, a brilliant military commander and primary hero of the Greek War of Independence. His name is inscribed in Greek (ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ ΚΑΡΑΪΣΚΑΚΗΣ) along the right rim, with the engraver's name often visible near the base. Reverse: Features Two Crossed Rifles from the 1821 revolution, positioned below a small olive branch. The denomination 2 and ΔΡΑΧΜΕΣ (Drachmes) are centered. The national title ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ (Hellenic Republic) and the date 1982 are positioned at the bottom. The 1982 Greece 2 Drachmai is a staple of the Third Hellenic Republic's modern coinage. It belongs to the "Heroes of the Revolution" series, which transitioned the nation's currency toward a celebration of Greek independence and intellectual history following the abolition of the monarchy. By 1982, Greece was moving into a new era of democratic stability. This series highlights the "Hero of Rumeli," Georgios Karaiskakis (1782-1827), a famous Greek klepht, armatolos, military commander, and a hero of the Greek War of Independence. The use of nickel-brass gave these coins a "golden" appearance that distinguished them from the smaller cupro-nickel denominations. Dimensions: Nickel-Brass. 24 mm. 6 g. Pickup category timeslot {A}
