The Obverse features the circular inscription DEUTSCHES REICH at the top. The center is dominated by a large, stylized Eagle (Reichsadler) with its wings spread. (This coin demonstrates the little known fact that while "Weimar Republic" is the unofficial historical designation for the German state between 1919 and 1933, the official name of the state was still "Deutsches Reich" (or "German Empire"!). The Reverse displays a large numeral "10" in the center, representing the denomination. Below the number is the word PFENNIG. The date 1920 below. The Germany 1920 Ten Pfennig Coin was issued during the early years of the Weimar Republic. Following the end of World War I, Germany faced severe shortages of strategic metals like copper and nickel, which had been diverted to the war effort. Consequently, between 1917 and 1922 this coin was struck in zinc, a cheap and readily available industrial metal, serving as emergency "war-style" coinage during the transition to the new republic. Zinc is a highly reactive metal, making these coins susceptible to "zinc pest"—a form of corrosion that appears in the white or grey spots visible on this coin's surface. Dimensions: Zinc. 21.0 mm. 3.2 g. Pickup category timeslot {A}
