Obverse: features the Small Imperial Eagle (Reichsadler), the heraldic symbol of the German Empire. The eagle bears the Prussian shield on its chest and is adorned with the collar of the Order of the Black Eagle. At the bottom, the mint mark "A" (Berlin Mint). Reverse: Displays a large numeral "50" in the center. Below the numeral is the word PFENNIG. Below the numeral is the inscription DEUTSCHES REICH, and the date 1876. The 1876 50 Pfennig was issued during the early years of the German Empire under Kaiser Wilhelm I. This coin is part of the first silver series introduced after the 1871 unification. Struck at the Berlin Mint (A), it represents the high standard of silver coinage maintained during the Empire's formative years. Although it has a tarnished appearance, this 50 Pfennig coin was minted in .900 fine silver. (In Imperial Germany, 1 and 2 Pfennig coins were struck in Bronze, 5 and 10 Pfennig coins were struck in Cupro-Nickel, but the higher value 50 Pfennig and above were struck in Silver (.900 fine)). In 1905, the design was changed to the "½ Mark" denomination, making these "50 Pfennig" inscribed silver coins a distinct and popular sub-type for collectors. As a silver coin, the coin's value starts at its bullion weight but rises quickly based on the preservation of the eagle's feathers and the wreath details. Given recent price of spot price of Silver (78.25 USD per troy ounce or 3.44 CAD per gram), the coin's total weight (2.777 g), and its silver fineness (0.900), there should be 2.499 g of Pure Silver in this coin, for a Total Melt Value for this coin of approximately 8.60 CAD. Dimensions: Silver (.900). 20 mm. 2.77 g. Pickup category timeslot {A}
