Obverse: Features the National Emblem of Mexico: A Mexican golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus (nopal), devouring a snake. This image is rooted in the Aztec legend of the founding of Tenochtitlan. Below the eagle is a half-wreath of oak (representing strength) and laurel (representing victory). Lettering: ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS (United Mexican States). Reverse: Features the powerful profile of Cuauhtémoc, the last Aztec Emperor (Tlatoani) of Tenochtitlan. He is shown facing left, wearing a magnificent traditional feather headdress (copilli). Cuauhtémoc is a symbol of indigenous resistance and national pride in Mexico. The denomination CINCUENTA CENTAVOS curves along the top. The mint mark M and the year 1959 are at the bottom. The Mexico 1959 Fifty Centavos coin is an absolute giant among mid-century coins. Known among collectors as the "Large Bronze Cuauhtémoc," this coin is famous for its incredible size and weight, representing a time when Mexican bronze coinage was still massive and impressive. 1959 was the final year of production for this massive bronze type. It had a mintage of approximately 11 million. After 1959, the 50 Centavos was drastically reduced in size and eventually switched to different metals as copper and tin prices rose. Dimensions: Bronze. 33.5 mm 14g (Huge—larger than a Canadian Silver Dollar, and nearly twice the weight of a modern Mexican 5 Pesos) Pickup category timeslot {A}
