This lot features two Mexico Twenty Centavos Coins from 1960 and 1970. The Obverse features the National Emblem of Mexico: A Mexican golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus, devouring a snake, rooted in the Aztec legend of the founding of Tenochtitlan. Below the eagle is a half-wreath of oak (representing strength) and laurel (representing victory). Lettering: ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS (United Mexican States). Reverse: Features a high-relief landscape masterpiece: The central motif is the "Pyramid of the Sun" at the ancient city of Teotihuacán. Behind the pyramid, are the two famous Mexican volcanoes, Ixtaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl. At the very top, centered between the numbers "2" and "0," is a radiant Phrygian cap (Liberty Cap) inscribed with the word "LIBERTAD." The name TEOTIHUACÁN is written at the base of the pyramid. The denomination 20 CENTAVOS and the date are at the bottom. The Mexico 1960 and 1970 Twenty Centavos coins are widely considered to offer of the most beautiful and iconic designs in the history of Mexican coinage. Known as the "Teotihuacán" or "Pyramid" type, it captures the essence of Mexico’s landscape and ancient history on a large, heavy brass planchet. The "Pyramid" design was so popular that it was minted for nearly two decades (1955–1971). Because of the high copper content in the brass, these coins offer a a rich chocolate patina.
