Lot #663: Dominican Republic 2010 Ten Peso Coin

Obverse: The obverse is dense with national symbolism: The Coat of Arms, located in the brass center, features a shield supported by a laurel branch and a palm branch. Above the shield is a blue ribbon with the motto "DIOS PATRIA LIBERTAD" (God, Fatherland, Liberty). Unique among world coins, the Dominican coat of arms features an open Bible in the center of the shield, opened to the Gospel of John 8:32 ("And the truth shall make you free"). Lettering: "REPUBLICA DOMINICANA" circles the top of the outer ring, with the date 2010 at the bottom. Reverse: Features the portrait of Matías Ramón Mella. Mella was a revolutionary, politician, and military strategist. He is a national hero who fired the famous blunderbuss shot (Trabucazo) that signaled the start of the Dominican War of Independence in 1844. Lettering: BANCO CENTRAL DE LA REPUBLICA DOMINICANA arches over the top ring. This Dominican Republic 2010 Ten Peso coin is a high-denomination bimetallic coin that stands out for its unique segmented edge and its tribute to one of the nation’s "Founding Fathers." Much like the Barbados 2008 Twenty-Five Cent Coin offered in Lot #662, this piece also has a strong connection to Canada, as the Royal Canadian Mint was one of the facilities used to produce this series. This 2010 design remained unchanged until 2017 when the currency name was officially standardized from "Peso Oro" to "Peso Dominicano."
