Historically, sawfish-shaped brass weights were used by the Akan people to weigh gold dust. Lettering: BANQUE CENTRALE DES ETATS DE L'AFRIQUE DE L'OUEST (Central Bank of West African States). Reverse: Commemorates the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations). The denomination 50 FRANCS is centered and surrounded by a bountiful harvest of local agricultural products, including beans, grains, and nuts. Lettering: UNION MONETAIRE OUEST-AFRICAINE (West African Monetary Union) and the date 1997. The Western African States 1997 Fifty Francs Coin is a classic piece of West African currency. It is issued by the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) and serves as the legal tender for eight countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal, and Togo.
