Obverse: Features the portrait of Julius Nyerere, the first President of Tanzania (1964–1985). Nyerere is shown facing left, flanked by small flowers. He is revered in Tanzania as Mwalimu (Teacher) and was a key figure in the pan-African movement. Lettering: TANZANIA 1977 at the top and RAIS WA KWANZA at the bottom (Swahili for "First President"). Reverse: Features a Common Ostrich (Struthio camelus) walking toward the left. The ostrich is a native of the African continent and is highly symbolic of the region's natural diversity. Lettering: SENTI ISHIRINI (Swahili for "Twenty Senti") and the number 20. The Tanzania 1977 Twenty Senti coin is a classic example of Tanzanian wildlife coinage. It features one of the most recognizable birds of the African savanna—the Masai Ostrich—and pays tribute to the nation's founding father. This coin was designed by the famous British engraver Christopher Ironside, who also designed the first decimal coins for the United Kingdom.
