This token is a fantastic piece of Canadian sports memorabilia. Released by McDonald's in partnership with the NHL Players Association, it was part of a 12-piece set issued to celebrate the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. This was a historic moment as it was the first Olympic Games where NHL players were permitted to participate. This specific token features two of the most iconic netminders in Canadian history. This pairing is particularly special because it represents two distinct styles of goaltending that dominated the NHL for nearly two decades: Obverse: Curtis Joseph ("Cujo"). Known for his incredibly fast reflexes and his trademark "growling dog" goalie mask. At the time of this token's release, he was a fan favorite for the Edmonton Oilers (and soon the Toronto Maple Leafs). Reverse: Martin Brodeur: Arguably the greatest goaltender of all time. He was the king of the "stand-up" and hybrid styles, famous for his puck-handling ability. In 1998, he was already a Stanley Cup champion with the New Jersey Devils. These tokens were distributed in small paper pouches at McDonald's across Canada. The set featured 12 tokens in total, pairing different stars of the "Dream Team" together.
