This aluminum medal is a space enthusiast's treasure. Struck to commemorate the July 20, 1969, Lunar Landing, it was produced by the Wellings Mint in Rexdale (now part of Toronto), Ontario. While more expensive versions were made in silver and bronze, this aluminum edition was widely distributed in Canada, often given to school children to mark the historic "giant leap for mankind." Obverse: Features a 3/4 view of the three smiling Apollo 11 astronauts: Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, and Michael Collins. The names of the astronauts are stacked above the mission title, APOLLO 11. Reverse: Shows the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) on the moon's surface with two astronauts. In the background, the Command/Service Module orbits above, with a distant Earth visible. The Legend: THE FIRST MEN ON THE MOON. The Date: 20 JULY 1969. The Wellings Mint, based in Rexdale, Ontario, was one of Canada's most prominent private mints during the 1960s and 70s. They were eventually absorbed by the Franklin Mint in 1973.
