Lot #727: Vintage 1910s Ontario Postcard - "Parliament Buildings, Toronto" - S.H. Knox & Co. - "Printed in Great Britain"

One Vintage 1910s Ontario Canada Postcard, unused, showing "Parliament Buildings, Toronto" published by S.H. Knox & Co. of Toronto, but "Printed in Great Britain" using high quality European Inks and Processes. No Stamp or Postmark. No Message. This card captures the "Golden Age" of postcards at its peak, showcasing the S.H. Knox & Co. legacy just before it was absorbed into the Woolworth empire. Seymour H. Knox was a cousin of F.W. Woolworth and operated a massive chain of 5-and-10-cent stores. Their Toronto office was a major distributor of Canadian views. In the 1910s, the finest lithography in the world came from Germany and Great Britain. Knox & Co. outsourced their printing to British firms to achieve a level of color depth that North American presses couldn't yet match. These cards often used a multi-color lithographic process, with rich, layered colors that feel "painted" onto the image, typically featuring a deep blue sky and a very specific "postal red" for the brickwork of the buildings. The card depicts the Ontario Legislative Building in Queen's Park, which opened in 1893. It showcases the Richardson Romanesque style, characterized by heavy stonework and rounded arches. At this time, the building would have been the undisputed focal point of the city's skyline, surrounded by much more open greenery than the dense institutional landscape of modern-day Toronto. Because this card is published by S.H. Knox & Co., it can be dated quite accurately: S.H. Knox & Co. merged into the F.W. Woolworth Company in 1912. Cards bearing the "S.H. Knox & Co." name were typically produced between 1906 and 1912. After the merger, the name was phased out. Further, the fact the card has a Divided Back which allowed for a message on the left and the address on the right. This was introduced to Canada only after 1903/1907. So this card was printed sometime after 1903 and before 1912. Note also the horse-drawn carriages in front of the building, which confirms the early date.
