One Vintage 1938 Topical Postcard, used, showing a Black Cat with a Horseshoe and Two Roses with the message "Very Hearty Birthday Wishes". This coloured postcard indicates "Printed in England by J. Beagles & Co., Ltd. E.C. 1. Printers and Publishers. Guaranteed Real Photograph. Best in the World" Not stamped. Not postmarked. But Ink Message: "To Sheila. With Nannie's Love. March 30, 1938". This J. Beagles & Co. postcard is a beautiful example of the "Real Photograph" trend that dominated the 1930s. Unlike the lithographic or "gelatine" cards of the previous decades, this was produced using an actual darkroom process, resulting in the high-definition clarity that Beagles boldly "guaranteed" as the Best in the World. By 1938, the imagery on birthday cards had become deeply symbolic. The Black Cat & Horseshoe were actually appropriate Birthday images: While we often think of black cats as bad luck today, in early 20th-century Britain and Canada, they were potent symbols of good fortune, especially when paired with a horseshoe. The Two Roses likely represent "Love and Beauty," a soft counterpoint to the "luck" symbols. Based in London (E.C. 1 refers to the City of London postal district), J. Beagles & Co., Ltd.was a premier publisher of Real Photo Postcards (RPPCs). These were printed on light-sensitive paper rather than using a printing press. This is why the card has a "photographic" silver-halide depth that doesn't show the "dots" of a lithograph under magnification. The lack of a stamp suggests that this card was likely hand-delivered or tucked into a gift, which explains why it avoided the wear and tear of the postal system.
