Lot #751: Two Vintage Postcards - 1907 Vintage Floral Postcard - "Raphael Tuck and Sons" - "Chromolithographed in Saxony" - 1955 "Salt Shaker" Mission Card

This lot features two Vintage Postcards: (1) First, one 1907 Vintage Floral Postcard, used, showing a White Lily with the message "Fair Hope Upon Your Pathway Smile". This coloured postcard indicates the publisher as "Raphael Tuck and Sons Art Series No. 6880. Art Publishers to Their Majesties, the King and Queen. Chromolithographed in Saxony". Postmarked, and previously stamped, but the stamp has been removed. This Raphael Tuck and Sons card is the "gold standard" of early 20th-century postcard collecting. Tuck was arguably the most prestigious publisher in the world, and this card features several markers that make it a centerpiece for a high-grade collection. Based in London, Raphael Tuck & Sonswas the pioneer of the "art postcard." Tuck was truly "Art Publishers to Their Majesties": Tuck held the warrant for Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, and later King George V. Significantly, this unique card was "Chromolithographed in Saxony": At the time, Saxony (Germany) was the global capital of high-end printing. The process used here involved layering up to 12 to 20 different colors using separate stone plates. This creates the "painted" depth and velvety texture seen on the white lily. The white lily was a popular subject for its "purity" and "hope" symbolism. Tuck meticulously numbered their series. Art Series No. 6880 is part of their extensive "Floral" and "Motto" lines, which were often sold in sets of six. The poetic message "Fair Hope Upon Your Pathway Smile" reflects the refined, almost lyrical tone of the Edwardian middle class. 1907 was the year the Divided Back was officially authorized in the US and UK. This "divided back" card was part of the "new wave" of cards that allowed the sender to write a message alongside the address. (2) Second, one 1955 USA "Salt Shaker" Postcard, showing "American Crib to Cross". This unusual purple and white postcard, with a pink Two-cent "John Adams" stamp, does not indicate a publisher, but bears the letterhead of Advent Christian Church, Lafayette Rhode Island. The message is a type written (or stencilled?) message to come hear slides and films of mission fields in Japan and the Philippines from returned missionaries, Rev. and Mrs. G. L. Kirby.
