One Vintage Embossed 1926 USA Greetings Postcard, used, showing Mounted Rider jumping a Horse with Floral Border and the message "Greeting Sincere". This heavily embossed olive and white does not clearly indicate a publisher, but has a logo with "A A" in a ciricle (Possibly "American Arts Company"?). Stamped with one Green USA One-Cent "Benjamin Franklin" Stamp (affixed upside down). Cancelled by hand-crossed "X". Postmarked in June 1926 in Emporia, Kansas. Addressed to "Miss P.J. Kopp, Alpe, Kansas". Message reads "Dear Agnes, We are planning on coming down to see you Sunday, if it is all right with you folks. Belle and Alois." This 1926 Greeting Postcard marks a transition from the "Golden Age" of the early 1900s into the more stylized and functional era of the mid-1920s. By 1926, the lush, multi-colored chromolithography of earlier cards was often replaced by more streamlined, cost-effective printing methods. The "Olive and White" scheme suggests a Duo-Tone process. This was a popular aesthetic in the 1920s, offering a more sophisticated, "muted" look compared to the vibrant Victorian florals. Despite the simpler color palette, the heavy embossing of the horse and rider shows that the tactile quality of German or high-end American cardstock was still highly valued for personal greetings. The message from Belle and Alois to Miss P.J. (Agnes) Kopp is a classic "social coordinator" card. This card documents a very local interaction in Lyon County, Kansas. Emporia and Olpe are only about 10 miles apart. In June 1926, sending a postcard to coordinate a Sunday visit was the most efficient way for Belle and Alois to reach Agnes without using a long-distance telephone line. The "Hand-Crossed X" Cancellation on this card is a "Pen Cancel." In smaller rural post offices or when the mechanical cancellation machine was unavailable, the postmaster would simply mark a large "X" across the stamp.
