Lot #765: Vintage USA 1905 Greetings Postcard - Falling Man - Air Balloon - "Will Drop In on You" - Ada OH to Conemaugh PA - USA 1¢ Green "Franklin" Stamp

One Vintage USA 1905 Greeting Postcard, used, showing a man with umbrella falling out of an air balloon with the printed message "Will drop in on you". This green and red coloured card does not indicate a publisher, but has an undivided back (marked "this side for address") with a ink message on the right side of the front of the card. Stamped with one Green USA One-Cent "Benjamin Franklin" Stamp. Postmarked in September 1905 in both Ada, Ohio and Conemaugh, Pennsylvania. Addressed to "Miss Miss Mae Grubb, Conemaugh, Cambria Country, PA". Cryptic Message continues the front printed message "Will drop in on you..." with "...when you cease to spend your evenings with your sweetheart in City Park. If I could be certain that I possessed such a luxury, i would be glad to sit any old place. Yours. C." This 1905 Novelty Card is a good example of "Postcard Wit," where the humor relied on a clever interaction between the printed image and a handwritten message. It captures a moment of playful, slightly jealous banter between friends (or perhaps a frustrated suitor) in the early 20th century. This card was mailed in September 1905, placing it right at the end of the Undivided Back Era (1901–1907). Because the back of the card was legally reserved only for the address (as noted by the "This side for address" mark), the sender, "C.", had no choice but to write their message on the front. Printers left "negative space" or white margins on the front specifically for this purpose. Given the 1905 date and the red-and-green palette, this is likely a Chromolithograph or a high-quality Halftone print. By calling a "sweetheart" a "luxury," the sender is self-deprecatingly suggesting they are single and perhaps a bit envious of Mae’s evening strolls.
