One Vintage 1900s Embossed Romance Postcard, unused, showing two sequential scenes in a gold and red gilt frame. The first scene, entitled "The Tiff" shows an 18th c. young woman in the woods, walking away from a young man. The second scene, entitled "Making It Up" shows an the young man offering a bouquet of red roses to the young woman. This full colour postcard indicates as publisher "The Philco Publishing Company, Holborn Place, London, W.C., Series 2201 B. Printed at our Works in Germany. Philco Series" No Stamp. No Postmark. Never Postally used. No Message. This Philco Series postcard is a classic example of "Sequential Narrative" or "Storytelling" cards, which were highly collectible in the Edwardian era. Based in Holborn Place, London, Philco was a major competitor to Raphael Tuck. The mark "Printed at our Works in Germany" is a hallmark of superior quality. German lithographers were the only ones at the time who could reliably execute the complex Gold and Red Gilt framing while maintaining the registration of the embossed details. The 18th-century "Costume" drama was a popular escapist theme in the 1900s. They use physical layout to imply the passage of time—a technique that was revolutionary for the stationary postcard format. Because this card was Printed in Germany, it features technical flourishes that set it apart. The "Gold Gilt" wasn't just ink; it was often a metallic foil or dust pressed into the card. The addition of Red Gilt (a translucent red lacquer over gold) creates a "jeweled" effect on the frame that is characteristic of high-end Philco cards.
