Lot #806: Three "Humour" Postcards - 1910s Girl (S. Berg) - 1930s Priest (Goldring Jersey Supply) - 1930s Fruit Vendor (Goldring John Olive) - Atlantic City

Three "Humour" Postcards: (1) First, one 1910s Vintage USA Topical Humour Postcard, unused, showing a girl in a striped dress and blue hat, with caption "How about it?" This full colour postcard does not indicate a publisher, but has an inkwell logo, and the number "239-12-Des." with the stamp box showing "Domestic one cent." The Inkwell and Quill logo was the trademark of the S. Berg company (sometimes associated with the Samuel Cupples Envelope Co. of St. Louis and New York). They specialized in "Novelty" and "Topical" cards, often using German-printed lithography for their American-themed sets. The Serial Number "239-12-Des." suggests this is design number 12 in series 239. The "Des." likely stands for "Design." These series were mass-produced for distribution in drugstores and "five-and-dime" shops across the United States. The "Domestic One Cent" instruction dates the card's design to before 1917, when the U.S. postcard rate was raised to 2 cents as a war tax. This postcard is a classic example of Atlantic City "Boardwalk Humour" from the 1930s. The Black and White format of this card was a deliberate choice to keep production costs low. Samuel Goldring & Jersey Supply Co. was a well-known name in New Jersey souvenir publishing. Jersey Supply Co. functioned as a local distributor that specialized in "view" and "humour" cards specifically for the New Jersey shore market. 245 S. Tennessee Avenue is right in the heart of the Atlantic City "Inlet" district, just blocks from the Boardwalk and the famous Steel Pier. (3) Third, one 1930s Vintage USA Topical Humour Postcard, unused, showing a Fruit Vendor upbraiding a female customer "No Squeeza Da Cocanut!". This black and white postcard is copyright by Samuel Goldring and indicates "Published by John P. Olive, 1022 Boardwalk, Atlantic City, N.J.". John P. Olive was a prominent distributor located at 1022 Boardwalk, right in the heart of Atlantic City's bustling commercial strip. Samuel Goldring was a prolific illustrator of the era, known for his "gag" cards. His work often focused on situational comedy between vendors and customers, utilizing the exaggerated expressions typical of the 1930s "comic strip" style.
