1954 USA Commemorative Cacheted First Day Cover - Engraved picture of the Monroe Doctrine, with caption "General Postage Issue, 1954, Monroe Doctrine". Cachet by C. Stephen Anderson. Stamped with 1954 USA Five Cent "James Monroe" Stamp (Scott #1038). Postmarked December 2, 1954 at Fredericksburg, Virginia. This 1954 First Day Cover (FDC) marks a significant entry in the Liberty Series of U.S. postage, honoring the fifth President of the United States. Produced in Fredericksburg, Virginia, the cover specifically commemorates the Monroe Doctrine on its anniversary. Issued on December 2, 1954, this USA 5 James Monroe (Scott #1038) stamp was part of the definitive "Liberty Series" that replaced the long-running Presidential Issue. The stamp features a portrait of James Monroe based on a painting by Rembrandt Peale. This was a Rotary Press issue. The Cachet artwork on the left was created by C. Stephen Anderson, a noted cachetmaker of the 1950s. Anderson’s cachets are prized for their "Fine Art" quality. This engraved scene likely depicts a scroll with the the Monroe Doctrine (1823), emphasizing the geographical separation of the Western and Eastern Hemispheres. The postmark date of December 2 is significant as it is the exact anniversary of Monroe’s 1823 message to Congress outlining the Doctrine. Dimensions: 10 mm x 17 mm Pickup category timeslot {A}
