Portraits of a young boy, ‘Phillip’ taken by famous British/Canadian photographer & artist VIOLET KEENE. Taken at her Toronto studio around 1944. Personally signed by the artist in original ROBERT HUBBARD ( framer to the Group of Seven) frame. Violet Keene was born in Bath, Somerset, England in 1893. She and her mother Minna Keene (also a well known photographer) moved to Canada with their family. Minna and Violet opened studios in Montreal and Toronto. They were hired by Canadian Pacific Railway to photograph the Rocky Mountains for promotion for travellers. After Minna died Violet took over the studios and created many portraits over the next decades. She moved to Oakville Ontario where she died at the age of 94, in 1987. Toronto University Archives holds a collection her and Minna Keene’s work at the IMAGE CENTRE. Violet photographed several luminaries such as George Bernard Shaw and Aldous Huxley.
