He lived and worked on Saltspring Is. and sold his turned work at the craft fairs on Saltspring Is., and Gabriola Is. • The "Maple" he refers to is the Bigleaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum) is the only maple species in the Pacific Northwest large enough to be harvested for timber. • The wood is dominated by burl patterns, which are dense, swirling grain structures formed by a tree's response to stress. You can see numerous small, circular "eyes" or "Birdseyes" across the surface. • These are a rare growth phenomena occurring in fewer than 1% of maples- where dormant buds are trapped in the grain. • In excellent condition, no breaks, cracks or chips.
