Kutani ware (Kutani-yaki)- Bowl or Tea Cup • Kutani ware (Kutani-yaki) from the Matsu-hiro Kiln , located in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. • These bowls are a near-exact match for the "Heirloom" pattern popularized in the 1950's and 60's. This style was part of a Mid-Century Modern trend that favoured "Asian Modern" aesthetics. • Aka-e (Red Painting): The feature the use of iron-red overglaze enamel. This technique a reddish-orange floral designs. • The red is typically complemented by smaller touches of green and black overglaze enamels, which were applied after the initial firing. • These bowls have different weights, and the inner rim width of the foot is slightly different as well. This would mean that they are hand thrown, rather than mold made. • Because of the size of this vessel it is a kobachi (small bowl) or a large senchawan (tea cup). • Both in excellent condition, no breaks, cracks, or chips.
