Japanese "Kutani-Yaki" Ware • (1950-1970) Hand thrown and hand painted shallow dish. • The four characters are read from top to bottom, starting with the right column: • (Right Column): (Kutani) Meaning "Nine Valleys," this refers to the production region in the Kaga area of Ishikawa Prefecture. • (Left Column): *I (Shikö) This is the artist's name or the name of the specific kiln where the piece was made. Literally, the characters translate to "Purple-Red" or "Violet-Crimson," which may reflect the artist's aesthetic or a signature color palette. • The central design is a hand-painted bellflower representing "unchanging love" or "honesty" in Japanese culture. • Kinrande (Gold Brocade): The fine, needle-like gold lines represent grass or light are a classic Kutani technique called Kinrande, which adds a layer of luxury and depth. • The signature Shikö (#*I) on the base suggests this piece was made in a private kiln or by a specific artisan during the Showa era (mid-to-late 20th century). • In excellent condition, no breaks, cracks, or chips.
