Vail - Navaio Horse Hair Wedding Vase • Tom Vail Sr., born in 1933, now 93 years of age is a celebrated Navajo (Diné) potter and the patriarch of a well-known family of artists specializing in horsehair pottery. •This piece was done by one of his descendants either Tom Vail Jr. or Loveitha Vail-Sanchez. • Real horse hair is placed on the hot vase immediately after firing, where it burns and leaves black carbon imprints on the surface. • This piece has had the added sgraffito carving of a bear. The bear is a central figure in Navajo culture, representing strength, leadership, and physical power, as well as a sacred protector and a spiritual guide. • The double-spouted design represents the bride and groom coming together, while the looped handle symbolizes the unity of marriage. • In excellent condition, no breaks, cracks, or chips.
