Tamarack Bird - Cree Nation of Waskaganish in Québec • Moose Factory, Ontario, which, along with the neighbouring community of Moosonee, became a principal production centre for the sculptures after artist John Blueboy adapted the traditional hunting lure into a decorative art form in 1965. • Blueboy himself was originally a Cree from Rupert's House, Quebec now known as Waskaganish. • These sculptures are primarily made from the twigs and branches of the tamarack (or larch) tree. The body is constructed around a core (sometimes a ball of inner twigs or other natural material like grass or even newspaper), and then wrapped tightly with longer, thinner tamarack twigs to create the final goose shape. • This bird is not signed. Hard to determine the age, however it was most likely made between 1980 and 2000. • In very good condition, there are minor breaks in the twigs. View images. • 22 cm. x 15 cm. x 9 cm.
