Lot #93: Two Torquay Motto Ware Jugs

Starting bidding

$1.00

Time Remaining:

Bidding starts in 0d 2h 0m

Two Torquay Motto Ware Jugs • These jugs are Torquay Motto Ware, a type of English art pottery produced in Devon from the late 19th to late 20th century with "folksy slogans" or "mottoes" in local dialects. 1) Large Jug: This jug was made by the Watcombe Pottery in Devon, UK. • The impressed "block letter" mark of the bottom stamp was commonly used between 1920 and 1945. • The hand-incised number "29" on the base is a decorator's mark or mold number, used internally by the pottery to track specific patterns or the work of individual artists. ----------------------------------------------- 2) Small Jug: was produced by either Aller Vale Pottery or Longpark Pottery in Torquay, South Devon, UK. • This Motto Ware utilizes a cream- coloured slip, as well as other coloured slips (a liquid clay mixture) over local red clay, decorated with hand-painted designs and sgraffito. • Because of the "Scandy" pattern and the specific Scottish-dialect motto, your jug was most likely made between 1900 and 1940. • Both used the local red Devon terracotta earthenware clay, and fired these pots in a wood fired kiln to cone 04. They have a lead based over glaze, and are not safe for food use. • Both in good condition, no breaks, cracks, but both have minor chips.
