Antique Copper Lustreware Cream Jug - Staffordshire, England • This piece does not have a makers mark, so I don't know which pottery in Staffordshire made this. • The leaf and vine design is hand painted with gold gilt. • The "copper" appearance is an overglaze. This was achieved by applying a thin solution of metallic compounds often containing small amounts of gold and other mediums which turned a coppery colour after a second firing in a specialized kiln. • This is a mold piece made with local red earthenware clay. The interior has a white glaze to cover the red clay. • These pieces were produced in English pottery centres like Staffordshire between approximately 1820 and 1870. • These pieces are characterized by their metallic, bronze-like sheen, achieved through a specialized glaze containing thin layers of copper or silver. • In excellent condition, no breaks or cracks, or chips.
