the wood worker, but guessing it was
made locally from someone from the
Vancouver Is. Wood Turners Guild.
• This has been identified as Garry oak
(Quercus garryana).
• The piece features characteristic
concentric ribbed details and a wide,
shallow rim, and the grain image makes
me think of an owl image.
• The interior of the turned foot has three
concentric circles with a hand tooled
cross-hatch design, unusual and
interesting.
• In excellent condition, no breaks,

Hand-Turned White Oak Serving Plate
• The &#34;burned&#34; maker&#39;s mark consists of
the letters &#34;MM&#34; within a circular border. I
have not been able to discover who this
wood truner is, but believe that the
person comes form Eastern Canada
where white oak is a dominate wood.
• This plate features a bold, coarse grain
pattern characteristic of White Oak. The
&#34;shimmering&#34; or ribbon-like streaks
running across the circular growth rings
are medullary rays (often called ray
flecks), which are especially prominent in
quarter-sawn oak.
• The wood shows a range of creamy
tans to medium browns, which are the
natural heartwood colours of White Oak.
• In excellent condition, no breaks,

• Born in 1952 Douglas (Doug) Fisher is a
world-renowned woodturning artist and
sculptor based on Vancouver Island,
formerly in Bowser on Vancouver Island.
• Since 1997, he has specialized in wood
sculptures that combine lathe turning
with intricate hand carving and alcohol-
based dyes.
• This Quilted Maple bowl is a highly
figured and sought after variety of Bigleaf
Maple (Acer macrophyllum), which is
indigenous to British Columbia.
• It creates a 3D shimmering effect
(chatoyancy) that makes the surface look
like rippling water or bunched fabric.

• This piece is signed Doran Miles in
September 1997. I have not been able to
pin down any more information, but they
are most likely a member of a local wood
turner&#39;s guild in the Victoria area.
• I believe that this bowl is made of
maple, and has a
&#34;satin&#34; feel to the grain,
and shows a knot with interesting grain.
• The base features a series of
concentric, incised rings, which are both
a decorative element and a common
technique used by woodturners to finish
the bottom of a piece

Doran Miles - Hand Turned Bowl

Dale L. Davies - Natural-Edge Maple
Burl Bowl
• I have not been able to find out much
information about Dale L. Davies. He
lived and worked on Saltspring Is. and
sold his turned work at the craft fairs on
Saltspring Is., and Gabriola Is.
• The &#34;Maple&#34; he refers to is the Bigleaf
Maple (Acer macrophyllum) is the only
maple species in the Pacific Northwest
large enough to be harvested for timber.
• The wood is dominated by burl
patterns, which are dense, swirling grain
structures formed by a tree&#39;s response to
stress. You can see numerous small,
circular &#34;eyes&#34; or &#34;Birdseyes&#34; across the
surface.
• These are a rare growth phenomena
occurring in fewer than 1% of maples-
where dormant buds are trapped in the
grain.

• Peter Hackett of Tree Island Studio lives
in Victoria, BC. He began in Edmonton
with carved sculpture in wood, and
when he moved to Victoria in 2018 he
began woodturning.

the wood had not been cures, so has
warped into an oval shape.
• The wood had knots and holes which
Peter has cleverly filled with a resin to
enhance the design, and to &#34;waterproof&#34;

Peter Hackett Wood Lathed Garry Oak Vase

Two Hand-Turned Maple Burl Holders
• Neither of these candle holders have a
chop mark, or a signature, so I have not
been able to discover the name of the
wood turner. I believe these were made
in BC, as burled and birds-eye Big Leaf
Maple are found here.
• These candle holders can be described
as a hand-turned Big Leaf burl maple tea
light holder, characterized by a low-
profile &#34;donut&#34; shape with highly figured
grain typical of burl wood.
• The wood has been polished to a
smooth, lustrous finish that highlights the
natural amber and golden-brown tones
of the maple.
• Because they are hand turned, they are
not exactly the same. Note differences in
size in the measurement section.
• Both in excellent condition, no breaks,

• This is a vintage &#34;Stokes&#34;, (specifically Stokes Accents) 
which refers to a line of decorative glassware. 
These were made in the 1970&#39;s and 1980&#39;s.
• The Owl Vases were hand blown in
either China or Taiwan. First into a mold
and then hand formed for the beak and
&#34;ears&#34;, and finally the eyes were added.
• It has a smooth transition from milky
opalescent white at the top to a deep,
honey-like amber at the base.
• Traditionally, &#34;hobnail&#34; refers to a
pattern of raised, rounded &#34;nubbles&#34; or
studs projecting from the surface, but
can also be referred to as the honeycomb pattern.
