A collection of small etchings, plus one color and one black & white lithograph. Etchings include a street scene in Warsaw, titled and signed by the artist in pencil in the margins, unframed. An unsigned, stark image of a plinth with the lower portion of an arm and a foot, hand-tinted, and a plaque in Latin indicating that this stone commemorated Marcus Valerius Mesalla Corvinus, a Roman general and patron of the arts. One phrase seems to allude to restrictions on how elaborate funeral displays could be, and this may be connected to the broken leg and hand? An Italian caption sits below the plinth. Unframed. A contemporary small etching titled Main St. Annapolis and signed in pencil by artist Dan Swann, 1889-1954. Swann specialized in etchings of historic architecture, and his work is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Library of Congress, the U.S. Naval Museum, and the Smithsonian Institution. Unframed. A small and lovely color engraving of several young men setting out in a boat that looks too small to us, titled Cookham, Berks. (Berkshire, England) in a cartouche in the elaborately scrolled border. Also tucked into the scrolls is the name of the artist and engraver Tombleson & Co. William Tombelson, 1795-c.1840, was known for architectural and landscape subjects. This appears to be a later engraving by J. Rolph, after Tombelson. In a silver leaf wood frame, under glass. Finally, an exquisite small steel engraving of a scene at East Rock, New Haven. A man and his dog climb the hill. A marshy plain with haystacks is in the middle distance, with the church spires and smoke stacks of New Haven spread out in the far background. Beautifully detailed, and note artist C. G. Griswold's initials hidden in lower right. Griswold was one of the artists who supplied images for "Picturesque America," a 2-volume documentation of American scenes, published by D. Appleton & Co., 1872-1974, as was this piece. Engraver Samuel Valentine Hunt was also an artist, known for his architectural scenes. Matted and framed under glass in a period-appropriate narrow gold frame, excellent condition. Dimensions: 11.5" - 16" X 9.5" - 13.75" Pickup category timeslot {B}
