- 3 gallon capacity - Stoneware / ceramic construction - Gray salt-glazed body with brown/dark glazed top - Single handle - Stamped crown with "3 GAL" marking This is a vintage Robinson Ransbottom Pottery Co. (RRP Co.) stoneware jug, a classic piece of American utilitarian crockery manufactured in Roseville, Ohio. 1. The Maker & Design Manufacturer: The Robinson Ransbottom Pottery Company. Ransbottom Brothers Pottery was founded in 1900, merging with the Robinson Clay Product Company in 1920 to become RRP Co., which operated until 2005. The Mark: The distinctive stamped stencil features an ornate crown enclosing a number, with "GAL" underneath. This "Blue Crown" or "Black Crown" stamp is the signature trademark of the company's utility stoneware lines. Style: This is a classic "two-tone" jug. The body features a light bristol/creamy glaze, while the top shoulder and neck are dipped in a dark brown Albany-type slip glaze. 2. Capacity & Scale Size: The "3" inside the crown denotes that this jug has a 3-gallon capacity. Scale Reference: As a massive utility jug, it stands roughly 14 to 16 inches tall. For visual context, the standard 355mL (12 oz) aluminum can placed at the base perfectly highlights its substantial size and volume. 3. Purpose & History Jugs of this size were the workhorses of 20th-century farms and households. Because stoneware is non-porous and naturally temperature-regulated when glazed, a 3-gallon jug like this was primarily used for bulk liquid storage. Common contents included: Bulk vinegar, molasses, or cider. Moonshine, whiskey, or home-brewed beers. Water for laborers out in the fields. 4. Era & Collectibility Age: Based on the specific style of the sharp, clean crown stencil and the uniform two-tone bristol glaze, this piece likely dates from the 1920s to the 1940s. Condition Notes: The stencil is remarkably crisp and dark. Small chip, see photo Pickup category timeslot {A}
