This is an exceptional and vibrant piece. You are spot on with your instinct—this is a traditional Indian Shamiana (wedding tent/canopy) sidewall or ceiling panel, specifically featuring Gujarati applique and patchwork embroidery (often associated with the Pipli or Rabari styles). In India, these highly decorative textiles are used to construct lavish, temporary tents for weddings, festivals, and outdoor celebrations. The Central Mandala (Chakla): The concentric circles represent the universe, unity, and wholeness. The Procession of Elephants: In Indian culture, red elephants symbolize royalty, strength, good luck, and prosperity. They are traditionally depicted marching in a circle to welcome guests and ward off negative energy. The Birds (Parrots/Peacocks): The red birds flanking the corners of the central blue square are typically parrots or peacocks, which represent love, passion, and courtship—perfect for a wedding canopy. 3. Construction & Use as an Awning The Canvas Backing: These panels are built tough. The decorative face is stitched onto a heavy cotton canvas or canvas-mix backing so it can withstand being stretched across wooden poles or metal frames outdoors. The Bottom Border: The triangular, pointed tabs at the very bottom (often accented with tassels or small mirrors) are called oloka or jhalar. When this is hung as an awning or side wall, these tabs dangle freely in the wind, catching the light and creating movement. Pickup category timeslot {A}
