The Salida ArtWalk: His storefront helped ignite Salida’s transformation from an economically depressed railroad town into Colorado's first officially certified Creative Arts District. He was a core founder of the town's highly celebrated annual Salida ArtWalk. Community Presence: Beyond operating his gallery for over 40 years, Chivvis has worked locally as an Arkansas River rafting guide, contributed to community oral history archives, and showcased public sculpture installations throughout regional Colorado venues. Jack Chivvis was born in Nevada. He grew up exploring the rural landscapes and historic ghost towns of the state, where he first developed his lifelong fascination with old railroad lines, abandoned structures, and the oxidized patinas of scrap iron.
