Nanking Crackle Ware 8" The close-up shows the etched brown band at the base and the painter's brushwork in more detail. The Brown Band: Notice the incised texture designed to mimic "bronze-effect" borders. This is a classic hallmark of Nanking Ware. The Painting Style: The blue brushstrokes are relatively quick and broad, which is typical for late 19th-century and early 20th-century export pieces produced in large quantities. This is a classic hallmark of Nanking Ware. The Painting Style: The blue brushstrokes are relatively quick and broad, which is typical for late 19th-century and early 20th-century export pieces produced in large quantities. The top-down view shows the rim, which is another defining feature of this ware. The Brown Edge: The very top edge of the rim has that same brown iron-oxide dressing seen on the bands and the base mark. This was often applied to mimic the "brown mouth" found on much older, prestigious Song Dynasty ceramics. Condition: Looking at this angle, the rim appears to be in very good shape. I don’t see any significant "flea bites" (tiny chips) or cracks, which is great for its value. Glaze Details: You can see some small dark specks in the white glaze; these are "iron spots" or kiln debris, which are perfectly normal for this type of provincial porcelain and add to its character. Based on everything shown—the 8-inch height, the scholar scene, the "Chenghua" mark, and this clean rim—you'll have a solid, authentic piece of early 20th-century Nanking Crackle Ware.
