- Madonna and Infant, Acrylic on Tempered Masonite Original Artwork - Signed by artist Shankman - Presented in an ornate gilt frame - Visible surface texture and paint impasto; no major tears Gene Shankman was a formally trained fine artist who studied at Chouinard Art Institute, now Otis College of Art and Design. A talented and versatile artist, he exhibited throughout Southern California during the 1960s and 1970s and received commissions for a series of California Mission paintings for Bank of America locations. His work was collected by notable figures including Eartha Kitt, Sonny and Cher, Howard Morris, and Myron Floren of Lawrence Welk fame. Gene worked across multiple mediums including oil, acrylic, pastel, and pen and ink, creating impressionistic seascapes, florals, and landscapes known for their vibrant color and craftsmanship. In addition to his artistic career, Gene worked as an electrical draftsman and engineer for major aerospace and industrial companies including McDonnell Douglas and Litton Industries. He was also known for handcrafting many of his own custom frames. Gene remained dedicated to his art from childhood into his early 90s, creating from his Academy Hill studio for more than 50 years.
