1964 50 Drachmai banknote This is a 50 Drachmai banknote from Greece, issued by the Bank of Greece (Trapeza Tis Ellados) with a date of October 1, 1964. Key Features of the Banknote Obverse (Front): Features the head of the mythological nymph Arethusa, accompanied by dolphins, a motif taken from ancient Greek coinage of Syracuse. An ancient Greek boat, specifically a trireme galley, is shown at the bottom right. Reverse (Back): Depicts a composition of both an old and a modern shipyard. Watermark: Shows the head of the Antikythera Youth (Ephebos). Color Scheme: Primarily blue and green on a multicolor underprint. Historical Context This note was part of the Third modern drachma currency series (1954–2001). It was first issued in April 1965 and remained in circulation until it was withdrawn in 1977. All Greek drachma banknotes lost their legal tender status and monetary value when replaced by the Euro, officially being demonetized in March 2012.
