1953 6 Pence This is a British Six pence from 1953, a significant year as it marks the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Often referred to as a "tanner," this coin was used in general circulation until 1980. Key Features Design: The reverse features a cross of floral emblems representing the United Kingdom: a Tudor rose (England), thistle (Scotland), shamrock (Ireland), and leek (Wales). Composition: By 1953, these coins were made of cupronickel (75% copper, 25% nickel) rather than silver. Significance: This is the first sixpence issued for Queen Elizabeth II's reign.
