Historical Context & Origin Region: Colonial Latin America (likely Mexico or Central America) Material: Polychrome wood, metal chain, silver cross (marked “Sterling, Mexico”) Period: 18th–19th Century Description This is an antique polychrome wooden figure of an angel or saint, carved in the traditional colonial Latin American style. The figure stands upon a rounded globe-like base, symbolizing heavenly dominion. The figure retains remnants of its original painted surface, now heavily worn with age, displaying traces of gilding and black drapery. The angel’s wings are gilded and attached at the back, while a sterling silver chain with an ornate cross pendant (hallmarked “Sterling, Mexico”) was later added, enhancing its devotional presentation. Carved devotional statues such as this were central to Catholic practice in the Spanish colonies, often housed in churches, monasteries, and private shrines. The style and wear are consistent with 18th–19th century folk-religious carving traditions. Features - Hand-carved wooden devotional figure with wings - Remnants of original polychrome and gilding - Angelic figure standing on symbolic orb base - Later addition: silver chain with hallmarked Mexican sterling cross - Highly expressive folk-colonial craftsmanship Cultural Significance Colonial religious art in Latin America blended European Catholic iconography with indigenous and local traditions. Angels, saints, and the Virgin Mary were often depicted in wooden sculptures, which became focal points for prayer and devotion. This piece exemplifies the enduring religious heritage of colonial Mexico or Central America, embodying both faith and artistry. Condition Significant wear and patina consistent with age. Surface shows flaking, cracks, and areas of loss to polychrome. The orb base has a large age crack and repair, but remains stable. Wings and halo show wear and possible later repairs. Chain and sterling cross pendant are later additions. Age (Approximate) 125–325 years old Provenance From a private collection in Norfolk, Virginia, USA. The extensive collection belonged to a professor at a local college who traveled internationally from the age of 15 and made it his lifelong mission to visit every country in the world.
