Historical Context & Origin Region: Spanish Colonial Territories Material: Hand-carved wood with original polychrome paint and gilding Period: Late 18th to early 19th Century Description This finely hand-carved wooden statue of the Madonna and Child exemplifies Spanish Colonial devotional art. The Virgin Mary is depicted in flowing red and blue robes with gilt highlights, holding the infant Christ who carries a golden orb, a traditional symbol of Christ as Salvator Mundi (“Savior of the World”). The figures are rendered with delicately modeled facial expressions and robust drapery folds characteristic of late Baroque influence in colonial religious sculpture. The piece is mounted on its original wooden socle, which displays age-appropriate craquelure and wear. Such statues were placed in churches, chapels, and private shrines, embodying the fusion of European Baroque artistry with local craftsmanship across the Spanish colonies.
