Historical Context & Origin Region: France, Western Europe Material: Forged steel with brass studs, linen and leather lining Period: Early 19th Century (Napoleonic Period, circa early 1800s CE) Description An impressive early 19th-century French cuirassier armor set comprising a forged-steel breastplate and matching backplate, mounted with traditional brass studs. Measuring approximately 16 inches high by 15 inches wide, this example remarkably retains its original linen lining with leather-trimmed edges—an increasingly rare survival on pieces of this age. The surface displays attractive historic patina and honest period wear, while the interior shows expected darkening from age and service. The refined contouring and precision brass riveting exemplify the superior craftsmanship of French military armories during the Napoleonic era. Features - Authentic French cuirassier breastplate and backplate from the Napoleonic era - Brass-studded construction and reinforced edgework - Original linen lining and leather trim elements retained - Excellent display presence with beautiful historical patina - A museum-quality example of elite European cavalry armor Cultural Significance Cuirassiers represented the elite heavy cavalry of Napoleon Bonaparte’s famed Grand Armée. Recognized for their imposing battlefield presence, discipline, and status, they wore breast and back armor as both functional protection and a symbol of military prestige. This cuirass stands as a powerful representation of European cavalry tradition and one of the most defining eras in military history. Condition Excellent presentation with stable patina throughout. Minor age-related wear, surface marks, and interior staining consistent with period use and age. Structurally strong and visually impressive, retaining notable original interior components.
